This is the time of loaves
and fishes.
People are hungry,
and one good word is bread
for a thousand.
David Whyte (b.1955) is an Anglo-Irish poet who moved to the United States in 1981 and works for a deeper incorporation of poetry into American life. This poem is from his collection The House of Belonging (Many Rivers Press, 1996).
